Breaking: DOJ Steps In at Last Minute, Issues Arrest Warrant for Kate Steinle’s Killer

The American public was absolutely horrified by the news yesterday that the illegal alien who killed Kate Steinle was found not guilty of murder or manslaughter in the case. Twitter lit up with disgust at the verdict and at the sanctuary city policy that allowed Jose Ines Garcia Zarate to be free to kill Steinle.

Although he was not convicted on the homicide charges, he was found guilty of felony possession of a weapon.

But it’s possible there might be some justice coming.

According to the Washington Free Beacon, the Department of Justice has issued an arrest warrant Friday for Garcia Zarate.

Officials at the Department of Justice told Fox News that there is an existing federal detainer that requires Zarate to be remanded into the custody of the U.S. Marshals to be transported to the Western District of Texas pursuant to the arrest warrant.

The Department of Justice on Friday unsealed the arrest warrant, which accuses Zarate of violating his supervised release, in the Western District of Texas, the Hill reported.

In 2015, Zarate was released from jail, despite the federal government having a detainer request for him. The Department of Justice may be considering federal charges in connection to Steinle’s death.

The Justice Department has announced that they will be looking into what charges might be filed against Garcia Zarate.

One possibility is that it is a federal felony with up to 10 years imprisonment for an illegal alien to be in possession of a firearm according to 18 USC secs.922(g), 924.

After the verdict, U.S. immigration officials announced on Thursday that Garcia Zarate would be deported.

But given his past history, pursuing federal charges might be better than deporting him and just having him come back again and commit more crime.

ICE and Trump weighed in after the verdict.

From Fox News:

ICE Deputy Director Tom Homan added, “San Francisco’s policy of refusing to honor ICE detainers is a blatant threat to public safety and undermines the rule of law. This tragedy could have been prevented if San Francisco had turned the alien over to ICE, as we requested, instead of releasing him back onto the streets.”

San Francisco is a sanctuary city, with local law enforcement officials barred from cooperating with federal immigration authorities. President Trump has threatened to withhold federal funding to cities with similar immigration policies, but a federal judge in California permanently blocked his executive order last week.

Trump tweeted late Thursday night calling the Steinle verdict “disgraceful,” adding “No wonder the people of our Country are so angry with Illegal Immigration.”

He tweeted again early Friday morning saying, “The Kate Steinle killer came back and back over the weakly protected Obama border, always committing crimes and being violent, and yet this info was not used in court. His exoneration is a complete travesty of justice. BUILD THE WALL!”

Attorney General Jeff Sessions also said that the reason the crime was able to happen was because of San Francisco’s sanctuary city policy.

“When jurisdictions choose to return criminal aliens to the streets rather than turning them over to federal immigration authorities, they put the public’s safety at risk,” the statement said. “San Francisco’s decision to protect criminal aliens led to the preventable and heartbreaking death of Kate Steinle.”

Hopefully, the DOJ is able to do what San Francisco was not and put him away for a long time.
